𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | Humble Beginnings, Global Recognition: ISU Ilagan Students Triumphs in International Program in Belgium.

In Belgium – A student leader from Isabela State University (ISU)–Ilagan has brought pride to the Philippines after earning international recognition during the North Intensive Program hosted by VIVES University of Applied Sciences and Howest University of Applied Sciences in Belgium.
Marc Bien Lungub, President of the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxiliary (UAPSA) at ISU–Ilagan, emerged as one of the winners in the program with his team’s innovative project titled “Small Plant, Big Impact: Duckweed as a Sustainable Biomaterial.”
The North Intensive Program, which gathers students from various countries, focuses on collaboration, innovation, and sustainable solutions. Lungub joined the program with the goal of gaining knowledge and experience, not anticipating that their work would stand out among international participants.
“I joined the program without expecting anything more than learning and growth. Winning was never something I imagined,” Lungub shared.
The award-winning project centers on the development of an acoustic and insulation panel made from sustainable and biodegradable materials. The team utilized duckweed as the primary biomaterial, combined with sawdust and cornstarch as a natural binding agent. The innovation highlights how eco-friendly resources can be transformed into functional construction materials.
Lungub credited the success to teamwork and collaboration with his international group mates — Elow from VIVES (Belgium), Paula from HOWEST (Latvia), and Gwen from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (Philippines). He also acknowledged the guidance of their case coach, Engr. Jefrie Alindayu of Saint Mary’s University (Philippines), whom he described as instrumental in shaping their journey.
The achievement was also made possible through the support of various institutions and individuals. Lungub expressed gratitude to the ISU–Ilagan Architecture Department, led by Ar. Blesie Joy Laguna, along with Ar. Jefsie Manuel Antonio and the faculty, Dr. Crestian Agustin, Dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT), and Dr. Alfonso R. Simon, Executive Officer.
He also extended appreciation to Isabela State University, particularly Ma’am Joan T. Ruiz, University Director for International Linkages, for her guidance from the visa process to the completion of the program. Additional support came from the UAP Isabela SM Amianan Chapter Architects, LGU Burgos, and the ISU–Ilagan Supreme Student Council.
The recognition not only highlights Lungub’s individual achievement but also showcases the capability of Filipino students to compete and excel on a global stage through innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.
