ISU Ilagan Clinches Championship Trophy at 2024 Regional Math Wizard Competition, Qualifies to National Tilt
The Isabela State University (ISU) Ilagan campus made headlines on October 18, 2024, as they took home the coveted Championship Trophy at the 23rd Regional Math Wizard during the 19th Regional Student Conference (RSCon) held at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac City, Ilocos Norte. Competing against top mathematics teams from across the region, ISU Ilagan’s victory underscores their commitment to academic excellence and mathematical prowess.
The Regional Math Wizard Competition, an annual event organized by the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines – Council of Student Chapter – North Luzon (IIEE-CSC-NL) encourage analytical and problem-solving skills among electrical engineering students in Ilocos Region (Region 1), Cagayan Valley Region (Region 2) and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Under the guidance of Engr. Rafael S. Ramos and Engr. Jean Claude Benitez, team chaoches, the ISU team demonstrated exceptional ability and strategic thinking. The team was led by captain Mark Angel Degracia, a 3rd year BSEE student known for his strong analytical skills and passion for problem-solving. “We prepared rigorously for months, going over past competition problems and refining our teamwork strategies,” Degracia said. “Bringing the trophy home to ISU Ilagan is a dream come true for us all.” The team composed Mr. Carl Jan M. Molano (2nd year), Mr. Markvic C. Capellan (3rd year), Ms. Olivia Acosta (4th year) and Mr. Jeff Beck Dalanon (4th year).
Throughout the rounds, ISU Ilagan maintained a strong lead, impressing judges and spectators alike with their accuracy and speed in solving complex problems. The final round, a particularly challenging face-off against MMSU and Cagayan State University, saw the ISU team clinching the win with a decisive answer in the final moments, solidifying their position as champions.
Engr. Mary Grace M. Baquiran, the Program Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department of ISU Ilagan, expressed pride with the students’ achievement, saying, “This victory is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our students and faculty. We are thrilled to see our students excel at this level, and we hope their success inspires others to pursue excellence in mathematics and beyond.”
The ISU Ilagan team’s victory not only brings honor to their university but also reflects the institution’s strong emphasis on academic rigor and critical thinking. The college has invested in enhanced mathematics resources and support for students, enabling talents like Salazar and his teammates to reach their full potential.
